Description
A sub-main distribution board (SMDB) is the panel between a building’s main distribution board and its final circuits. The main board feeds each SMDB, and each SMDB feeds the lighting, sockets and equipment on its own floor, wing or area. MEK builds SMDBs to each project’s circuit schedule, and MEK Uganda supplies them to contractors and developers across Uganda and to all East and Central African countries.
Where does an SMDB sit in a building?
| Level | Panel | Feeds |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Main distribution board (MDB) | Incoming supply to the whole building |
| 2 | Sub-main distribution board (SMDB) | One floor, wing or area |
| 3 | Final distribution board, e.g. a lighting DB | Final lighting, socket and equipment circuits |
Splitting distribution this way keeps a fault in one area from shutting down the whole building, and makes maintenance and future changes simpler.

How to specify an SMDB
- Circuit schedule. List the outgoing circuits, their ratings and what they feed.
- Incoming supply. Give the rating of the feed from the main distribution board.
- Spare ways. Allow spare circuits for future changes.
- Location. Tell us where it will be mounted and how cables will enter.
- Metering and controls. Note any sub-metering, contactors or indication needed.
Send your single-line diagram or circuit schedule to MEK Uganda and we will quote the board.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sub-main distribution board?
A panel that takes power from the main distribution board and distributes it to the final circuits of one floor, wing or area of a building.
Where does a sub-main distribution board go?
It goes downstream of the main distribution board, usually one per floor, wing or area. It feeds that area’s final circuits.
Can the circuits be configured to my building?
Yes. MEK builds each SMDB with the number and rating of circuits your design needs.
What protection rating does the enclosure have?
IP65, in galvanised, powder-coated steel up to 2.0 mm thick, with a lockable door.
Do you deliver outside Uganda?
Yes. MEK Uganda delivers across Uganda and to all East and Central African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and the DR Congo.
